The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has announced that Brandon Haley of Leeds, Ala. has become the 147th grounds management professional to successfully complete its Certified Grounds Manager (CGM) program.
Haley currently serves as the Groundskeeping Manager at Red Diamond Inc. PGMS recently spent a few moments getting to know Brandon, who has been a PGMS member since 2011.
PGMS: Why did you want to become a CGM?
Haley: I have always aspired to be recognized as a professional in my field. Achieving my certification has always been a part of that. For me, if you are going to spend your life’s work in a particular field, you need to push yourself and your profession to a higher level. I hope to continue that through the PGMS and other Green Industry organizations.
PGMS: How has the CGM program helped you further your career?
Haley: It forced me to think about all of my plans and put them in one place. I was able to see the areas that I need work on, and the areas that I truly enjoy. My supervisor was also able to see all of the work that goes on behind the scenes when he looked through my open book. I know that being able to share all of that information with him will only help me at Red Diamond.
PGMS: What advice do you have for aspiring CGMs?
Haley: Fill out the application and do it! Start early and force yourself to not procrastinate. The best tip of advice is to start your open book in PowerPoint.
PGMS: What challenges have you faced in your professional career that helped you through the process?
Haley: Thankfully, I have become used to long hours through previous employment and my MBA degree. I had always planned to do a little each day on my presentation during the day, but that did not work out well. I ended up having to work weekends and stay late, but it was worth it in the end! The biggest challenge for me was having my mom pass away towards the end of my year. She had always pushed me to be the best in my industry and never settle. I could not let her down.
PGMS: What are your favorite aspects of working in the green industry?
Haley: Like many, I love working outside. However, the real draw for me is doing something different each day and being able to actually see the results of what I do. My first job in high school was in the Green Industry, and I have never turned back.
