PGMS Announces Brad Barbee as the 158th CGM!

BradBarbeeThe Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has announced that Brad Barbee of Tifton, Ga. has become the 158th grounds management professional to successfully complete its Certified Grounds Manager (CGM) program. Barbee currently serves as the grounds manager for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

PGMS: Why did you want to become a CGM?
Barbee: I was asked by Greg Fear, CGM to join PGMS and to take a look at the CGM program and determine if this would be something that I would be interested in. I elected to join and also enroll in the program to better my career and to challenge myself on a professional level.

PGMS: How has the CGM program helped you further your career?
Barbee: Acknowledgment throughout the industry and with my working peers, as a CGM, will not only add another feather in my cap but also provide proof that I hold myself to the standards of the program.

PGMS: What advice do you have for aspiring CGMs?
Barbee: Take the plunge and keep your head above water. If you feel like you are drowning, call your mentor. Brandon Haley, CGM was my mentor and he helped me keep my head above water while completing the open book portion of the CGM process. Anthony Williams, CGM also supported my efforts and I am very thankful! My advice would be for you to save yourself plenty of time to complete the open book portion of the process and utilize your mentor when the water begins to rise!

PGMS: What environmental challenges do you face in your career?
Barbee: We have two drainage retention areas at ABAC that have restrictions on pesticides and herbicide usage. Line trimming is the preferred method of maintaining an aesthetically pleasing appearance but is not easy to do during heavy periods of rainfall. We have a design planned out for the DRA to include native grasses, trees and shrubs surrounding those areas to serve as a barrier for the new Wildlife Sensitive Areas. The converted DRA to WSA will also allow our faculty to utilize them for educational teaching purposes.
