PGMS Announces 2017 Professional Award Winners

The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) honored several grounds professionals with numerous awards as part of their annual Awards Dinner that took place Friday, Oct. 20 during the 2017 School of Grounds Management & GIE+EXPO held in Louisville, Ky.

PGMS recognized Steve Keating, CSE, CME (on the right in photo) of the Toro Company with the PGMS Gold Medal Award. The PGMS Gold Medal is given to an individual or entity to recognize them for outstanding and long-term achievements and/or contributions to the green industry. Keating served as the facilitator for the PGMS 2015 strategic planning session. After spending a weekend discussing ways to continue not only growing PGMS, but the Green Industry, his expertise and insight proved invaluable for the association. As a Certified Marketing Executive, Keating has an extensive background in leading people, developing leadership skills and managing businesses. His presentations and his enthusiasm for leadership and for helping advance others in our profession are all part of the reason why PGMS recognized him with the Gold Medal Award.

Each year the PGMS President is asked to give a President’s Award to a member or members they feel have shown outstanding service and contributions to the Society. This year, President Marion Bolick, CGM (on the left in photo) honored Susanne Woodell, CGM (on the right in photo) of Asheville, N.C. for spending countless hours in developing and coordinating the PGMS School of Grounds Management Summer Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, which provided attendees behind-the-scenes tours of Bank of America Stadium, the Bartlett Tree Research Facility, Metrolina Greenhouses and University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Woodell also lined up four dynamic speaker sessions for the event. Additionally, her commitment to growing the next generation of grounds professionals has been enormous. She has represented PGMS during student career days, helping to develop PGMS’ relationship with the Green Industry Web Portal and getting students to apply for PGMS scholarships.

The Special Award of Distinguished Service recognizes outstanding service from a board or committee member. This year PGMS honored Stephanie Bruno (on the right in photo) of Forest Hill, MD and PGMS’s incoming Executive Director. While all board and committee members are hardworking and committed to our growth and success, this award is given to acknowledge outstanding service for an individual that goes above and beyond. Bruno has coordinated many of the activities this Society has undertaken including the Schools of Grounds Management & GIE+Expo, the CGM program, membership retention, the Strategic Plan, and more.   Stephanie is an extremely dedicated professional who is always there to help all the volunteer leaders in effectively achieving their goals. She knows how to spot talent and nurture such talent into leadership for PGMS. She identifies areas of Society activities that need improvement and brings them to attention with suggested solutions.
