PGMS DC Branch February Meeting Recap

Izaak Walton League of America National Headquarters
FEBRUARY 2 , 2012

The DC branch started the 2012 year with its first monthly meeting at the Izaak Walton League National Headquarters located in Gaithersburg, Md. with over 40 members and guests present.

Founded in 1922, the Izaak Walton League is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected conservation organizations. With a powerful grassroots network of more than 250 local chapters nationwide, the League takes a common sense approach toward protecting our country’s natural heritage and improving outdoor recreation opportunities for all Americans.

The meeting presenter was Mrs. Rebecca Wadler Lase. Rebecca is the Sustainability Education Program Associate. Her talk was about the Izaak Walton League itself and their mission across the United States, the property on which their site is located and a creative way to control the site’s invasive species using goats. This project was done in conjunction with the City of Gaithersburg last summer as a way to effectively remove invasive species without using chemical control as a primary means to remove all the invasive plants. She also detailed the future plans to re-forest these areas with new tree plantings.

Members who are Certified Arborists were able to obtain 1.5 CEU credits for this presentation.

The Branch’s annual Business Meeting was also held that evening. Newly elected President, Adam Newhart, provided a review of 2011 with the annual President’s report and the Branch’s plans for 2012. Branch treasurer, Doug McDaniel, presented a review of the Branch’s finances from 2011 and then presented the 2012 budget. All members present approved it.

Our March 1 meeting will be held at the University of Maryland at College Park campus in the Riggs Alumni Center. We will have an entomology presentation by Paula Shrewsbury, Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in Ornamental and Turf IPM.

The DC Branch would like to thank their meeting sponsor Newsom Seed.
