PGMS Announces Three Recipients of
2003 Anne Seaman Memorial Scholarship
The
Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) recently awarded
the Anne Seaman Memorial Scholarship to John S. Knowlton, Amanda
R. Erickson, and Josyln J. Schmidt.
PGMS offers the Anne Seaman Memorial Scholarship to those interested
in pursuing higher education in grounds management. To apply for
the scholarship, all applicants must submit a cover letter, current
resume, college or school transcripts, two letters of recommendation
and a letter from a PGMS member sponsoring the applicant in addition
to the completed scholarship application.
Scholarship
applications are ONLY accepted between the first Monday in April
and the first Friday in July of every year. All applications are
judged on completion and presentation of total criteria. For further

The 2003 scholarship recipients are:
John
S. Knowlton
John Knowlton is a native of Old Tappan, NJ and is currently a senior
at Cornell University studying landscape architecture.
A 1999 graduate from Northern Valley Regional High School in Old
Tappan, NJ, his career goal is to be a licensed landscape architect
with a nursery/design business.
Johns
work experience includes working at the Scott Arboretum in Swarthmore,
PA, the Twombly Nursery in Monroe, CT and most recently with Blue
Meadow Landscape Architects in Franklin Lakes, NJ where he assisted
and led crews installing residential landscapes, ponds, waterfalls
and hardscapes. At Blue Meadow, John also consulted with clients,
designed properties and chose plant material.
John is a member of the Horticulture Club at Cornell University,
the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Pennsylvania Landscape
Nursery Association and the Perennial Plant Association, among others.
Amanda
R. Erickson
Amanda Erickson of Logan, UT is an outstanding example of the type
of student that the PGMS wants to help with scholarship assistance.
A graduate of Mountain Crest High School in Hyrum, UT in 1999 with
a 4.0 grade point average, Amanda is committed to a future in the
Green Industry.
Currently Amanda is attending Utah State University in order to
acquire a degree in Horticulture. Amandas career goal is to
own a private landscape business that would focus on design, construction
and maintenance.
Her work experience includes Rudys Greenhouse in Logan, UT,
the Logan City Police Department and the Utah State University Physical
Plant. She is currently a grounds maintenance intern at the University.
Amanda has been the recipient of the Utah Agricultural Leadership
Scholarship (2001), and has been nominated for membership in Gold
Key National Honor Society (1999-2001), the National Society of
Collegiate Scholars (1999-2001) and the National Deans List
(1999, 2000).
Joslyn
J. Schmidt
Also receiving PGMS scholarship support is Joslyn Schmidt of Vero
Beach, FL. A graduate of Indian River Charter High School in Vero
Beach, FL, she is currently studying Landscape Architecture at the
University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. Her goal is to be a landscape
architect and work either commercially, residentially or for the
government. She would also like to be self-employed as well.
Joslyn was inducted into the National Honor Society, valedictorian,
a member of the Whos Who Among American High School Students,
and member of the National Honor Roll. She was also voted the Most
Outstanding Offensive Player, all-conference, all-star, MVP, Athlete
of the Week, and the U.S. Lacrosse National Academic All-American
on her high school lacrosse team.
Her work experience includes Blossoms Flower Nursery, Highland
Hill Deli in Highlands, NC, First Church of God Catering in Vero
Beach, FL and the Highland Hiker in Highlands, NC.
