1: Small Site (commercial or primary work site with a budget under $100,000)

2: Residential Landscape (single residence or estate owner)

3: Public Works Site (includes parkways, greenways, and intersections)

4: Shopping Area

5: Hospital or Institution

6: Government Building or Complex

7: Cemetery or Memorial Park

8: Industrial, Commercial Site, or Office Park

9: Park, Recreation Area, or Playground

10: Multiple Sites under Management Company

11: Condominium or Apartment Complex

12: Hotel, Motel, or Resort

13: Amusement Park, Theme Park, or Zoo

14:   A) Athletic Fields – baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer (high school, collegiate, semi-pro)

B) Professional Fields – baseball, football, soccer, tennis

C) Golf Course

15:   A) School Grounds (kindergarten – high school, technical school, community colleges)

B) University and College Grounds

C) Urban University Grounds


A distinguished panel of judges, selected by the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS®) will determine the award winners. All decisions of the judges are final.

Grand – Highest in category with a minimum overall score of 85 points
Honor – 70-84 points
Merit – 55-69 points

Category percentages for judging are as follows:

  • Golf Course: 60 (turf) 10 (landscape) 8 (safety) 8 (challenges) 4 (budget) 10 (sustainable practices)
  • Sports Turf: 40 (turf) 15 (landscape) 12 (safety) 12 (challenges) 6 (budget) 15 (sustainable practices)
  • All other categories: 20 (turf) 20 (landscape) 15 (safety) 15 (challenges) 10 (budget) 20 (sustainable practices)

Any rejected applicants will be given a second chance to re-submit the awards package the next year at a discounted rate of $100. The awards committee will write up extensive notes on how a rejected applicant can improve the submission for the next year.

Sustainability Award
The Sustainability Award can be given to a site that demonstrates an outstanding understanding of sustainability, with a minimum of five (5) sustainable examples and must receive no score less than 18 points from each judge (20 total points possible). This award may not be given annually if sites do not meet the criteria.

Overall Award
The Overall Award can be given to a site that achieves 95 points or greater from all judges and achieves high marks in each category. This award may not be given annually if scoring does not meet these qualifications.


Awards will be presented during the 46th Annual Green Star Awards® Banquet taking place as part of the 2020 School of Grounds Management (SGM®) & GIE+EXPO being held in Louisville, Ky. from October 20-23. The Awards Banquet is Thursday, October 22, 2020.
