This year, New York City can boast two Green Star Awards: An Honor Award for Columbia University in the Athletic Fields category (to add to their prior award for Urban University Grounds), and an Honor Award for New York University in the Urban University Grounds category.

On November 10, 2015, Northeast NJ/NY PGMS Branch President Frank Molina of Columbia University was joined by PGMS’s new President John Doiron to welcome PGMS members including past PGMS President George Van Haasteren to a branch meeting at New York University in Manhattan. Members came from several states to hear presentations on “Trees in Sacred Space,” and go on a site tour of the National 9/11 Memorial.

The Green Star Awards for Columbia and NYU underscore the fact that Northeast New Jersey and New York City are home to many high profile parks, campuses,and landscapes that feature cutting edge urban landscape designs. For our branch meeting on November 10th, we focused on two of the newest and most important of these sites:

Brooklyn Bridge Park, which has transformed over 80 acres of the formerly industrial waterfront into a state-of-the-art park The National 9/11 Memorial where over 400 Swamp white oaks were planted on a highly engineered site of national remembrance.

Northeast NJ/NY Branch Secretary George Reis of New York University introduced the speakers and their topics:

Rashid Poulson, Horticultural Supervisor of Brooklyn Bridge Park – “The Urban Succession Forest of Brooklyn Bridge Park” Brent Craft, Project Manager & Construction Supervisor, Kelco Construction, Inc. -“Tree installation for the National 9/11 Memorial” Wayne S. Dubin, Vice President & Division Manager  NY Metro West Divistion, The F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company – “Tree Care and Maintenance at the National 9/11 Memorial”

After lunch and the final presentation, PGMS members were given a site tour of The National 9/11 Memorial by Mr. Dubin of Bartlett Tree Experts.
