Urban University Grounds
Honor Award

The University of Pittsburgh Grounds department is responsible for maintaining the 145 acre urban campus that lies within the shadow of the city of Pittsburgh. Thirty one full-time and fifteen seasonal employees provide coverage 24 hours a day to service all of the landscaped areas, lawns, sidewalks, parking lots, parking garages and athletic fields.  The campus is divided into nine work zones with each zone having all of the tools and equipment on hand to ensure the staff is able to efficiently complete their daily tasks. Winter snow and ice control of more than thirty miles of sidewalks and over 2,000 steps keeps the Grounds department staff just as busy as the summer months.
